Shane Carmody is Director of Collections and Access at the State Library of Victoria. His mother taught him not to write in books.

Spiridoula Demetriou is writing a PhD on 'The Creation of Modern Greece: Mesologgi, Art and Philhellenism in the C19th' in the Department of Art History, School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. In her spare time, she works in the family business: The Albert Park Deli.

Chris Elmore is a Melbourne-based writer and researcher with an interest in local and family history, editing, and bibliographical and literary studies. He is currently researching aspects of nineteenth-century paper making.

Tom Griffiths is Professor of History in the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University. He was awarded a Humanities Fellowship by the Australian Antarctic Division in 2002–03 and is the author of Slicing the Silence: voyaging to Antarctica (2007). Stephen Murray-Smith published one of his earliest essays (on Anzac Day) in Overland in 1982.

Vane Lindesay is a leading black-and-white artist and bookman, whose books include The Inked-in Image: a social and historical study of Australian comic art (1979). A portion of his memories, 'A Bookman Recollects', was published in the Autumn 2002 (no. 79) issue of the La Trobe Journal.

Andrew Mcconville is a reference librarian at the State Library of Victoria and undertook a staff fellowship in 2006 researching Melbourne's links with early Antarctic exploration

Marg Mccormack is the Australian History and Literature Librarian at the State Library of Victoria.

John Mclaren is Emeritus Professor in Humanities at Victoria University, Melbourne. He was editor of the Australian Book Review, and since 1967, has been variously an Associate Editor, Editor and Consulting Editor of Overland. He was a friend and student of Stephen Murray-Smith.

Davidmurray-Smith inherited his parents' enthusiasm for Bass Strait and regards Erith Island as his home. He is forced, however, to earn a living on the Australian mainland where he works for the Victorian Government in the Department of Justice.

Fiona Salisbury is currently the Reference and Information Services Librarian at La Trobe University Library. Prior to this she worked at the University of Melbourne in various information services roles including Director, Academic Centre, St Mary's College and Newman College.

was established in 1994 to raise funds to support the State Library of Victoria. It encourages and promotes private philanthropy and corporate sponsorship for State Library projects, including preservation of Victoria's cultural heritage, conservation of valuable collections, acquisitions of items of historical significance, and delivery of educational programs and research services to the community.

This issue of the Journal has three mini-themes: one on Antarctica, the second and third on two formidable Melbourne figures, Stephen Murray-Smith and Redmond Barry. It opens with Tom Griffiths' 2007 Stephen Murray-Smith Memorial Lecture, 'The Cultural Challenge of Antarctica', and is followed by an assessment of Murray-Smith's legacy by John McLaren. Continuing the Antarctic theme is an article on the diaries of Keith Jack kept while stranded at Ross Station during Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1917. Antarctica is also represented in an article on the Vic Spitzer Collection of mountaineering books donated to the library in 2006. There are two articles in this issue on books from Redmond Barry's library and they are followed by an essay on Philhellenism and modern Greece by one of the first recipients of the A. G. L. Shaw Summer Fellowships. The issue concludes with a piece on the graffiti in the dome of the State Library and a bibliography of Stephen Murray-Smith's writings on the Kent Islands and Bass Strait.
