In This Issue

Kathleen Fennessy details the history of Art at the Melbourne Public Library before the institution of the National Gallery; Shane Carmody surveys the previous history of the room known as the Cowen Gallery, and explains the rationale for collecting paintings in the State Library; Virginia Dahlenburg describes the work involved in conserving the paintings now in the collection; Madeline Say chronicles the travels of William Strutt's Black Thursday before and since it was purchased by the State Library in 1954, and in a second article traces the influence of surveyor Robert Hoddle's field sketches on local landscape painters in the nineteenth century; Anne Colman looks at the work of Louis Buvelot, 'Father of Australian Landscape Painting', in Brazil and Australia; Anne Neale identifies an Edward La Trobe Bateman's watercolour that has been wrongly identified for many years; Caroline Jordan writes on the career of nineteenth-century art dealer Andrew Fletcher, whose business, 'Fletcher's of Collins Street', flourished in 'Marvellous Melbourne'; Olga Tsara examines the history of the two political poster workshops now known as RedPlanet, which flourished in Melbourne from the 1970s to the 1990s.
Complementing these scholarly articles, which are illustrated, is a selection of colour reproductions of paintings currently hanging in the Cowen Gallery of the State Library.
