Front Cover:
‘Petrogale Pencillata, Gray’ (Brush-tailed rock wallaby); reproduced from John Gould, The Mammals of Australia, 1863.

John Gould (1804-1881) is best known for his many publications on birds, including The Birds of Europe, and The Birds of Great Britain, which were produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth. An eighteen-month visit to Australia by the Goulds led to the seven-volume The Birds of Australia, published in London between 1840 and 1848. The work comprised over 600 handcoloured lithographs, many of which were done by Elizabeth before her death in 1841. While in Australia Gould began a study of the local animals, which resulted in the magnificent three-volume publication, The Mammals of Australia, published between 1845 and 1863.
Back Cover: ‘Ned Kelly at Bay’. Wood engraving (1843-1918); signed and dated ‘T. Carrington / 28.6.80’ (the day of Ned Kelly's capture). Published in the Australian Sketcher, 3 July 1880, page 145.
