  • Margaret Carnegie is well known in the Australian art world as both collector and patron. Her papers include correspondence from artists, art historians, gallery directors and critics. She has also contributed to the Australian dictionary of biography and her working papers for her articles on A. R. Blackwood (1850–1905), R. D. Blackwood (1862–1940) and J. A. Campbell (1854–1916) are included.

• Chirnside, Robert.

  • Robert Chirnside (1830–1902) sailed to Australia in 1857 to manage the “Werribee” run for Thomas Chirnside. He and his family were involved in the “Mount Rothwell’, “Eunach” and “Weering” runs. Their major interest was sheepbreeding. The Chirnside papers include family and business correspondence, diaries, financial records and miscellaneous papers. Also included are financial records of the L. C. Chirnside partnership, Little River, 1968–1969.

• Coleman, Thomas L.

  • Thomas Coleman, special correspondent for The Australian Cyclist, and Alfred Mather cycled from Darwin to Melbourne in August-November 1897. Coleman's record book contains details of their trans-Australian journey as far as Glenelg, South Australia.

  • Christ Church, South Yarra has deposited with the Library an almost complete set of records providing a comprehensive account of its activities. Included are minute books, financial records, letter books, preacher's books and marriage and baptism registers and certificates. Some records from St. Chad's and St. Lawrence's, two mission chapels of the Church, are also included.

• Crosthwaite family.

  • The Crosthwaite family were early settlers in the Kiewa Valley. Their papers include family correspondence and the diary of John Crosthwaite describing farm life in the 1860's. Some related photographs are held in the Picture Collection.

• Embling, Thomas.

  • Thomas Embling (1814–1893), doctor and parliamentarian, was a key witness in the 1852 Parliamentary Enquiry into the management of the Yarra Bend Lunatic Asylum and his diary provides a detailed account of the dispute which led to the Enquiry.

  • Dr. Evans, notable Williamstown Historian, intends to present to the La Trobe Library his extensive collection of research material, plans and manuscripts. The first installment includes original records and notes concerning Williamstown, its historical buildings, council and other local bodies, as well as a number of personal papers.

• The Friends Peace Committee.

  • The Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, held their first meeting in Australia in 1832. Pacifism is one of the fundamental xml:ideals of this group, and the records of its Peace Committee include minute books, correspondence and other papers relating to anti-conscription. These records are a valuable addition to other Friends papers held in the Library.

• Glenelg Regional Library Service.

  • Presented by the Glenelg Regional Library Service. In 1979 the Glenelg Regional Library Service received a special projects grant from the Library Council of Victoria to fund an oral history project in the region, which covers Casterton, Hamilton, Heywood and Portland. Entertainment is the focus of the interviews, although the reminiscences of the interviewees span a wide range of experiences from the beginning of this century to the present. Duplicate tapes are held by the Glenelg Regional Library Service.

• Heath, Frank.

  • Frank Heath was a renowned architect and town planner whose work included hospitals, welfare and private housing and urban and rural development schemes. The records of his architectural practice comprise drawings, specifications, plans and some correspondence. Frank Heath and his father shared a close interest in the Cremation Society of Victoria and also included are records from this Society.

• Hodges, Frederick N.

  • Frederick Hodges recorded events in the history of gold and silversmithing in Australia with meticulous detail. His account includes biographies, works and marks of goldsmiths and a directory of goldsmiths, jewellers, watchmakers and engravers.

• Institution of Engineers, Australia, Victoria Division.

  • Presented by the Victorian Division of the Institution of Engineers Australia.
  • The Institution of Engineers, Australia was established in 1919 by an amalgamation of state bodies. State divisions remain the most important link for members and the archives of the Victorian Division include membership records, minutes and other records of branches and country groups and the files of the divisional office. Also included are some records of the Victorian Institute of Engineers, 1883–1952.

• Leeper Family.

  • This large collection of correspondence comprises letters from Sir Reginald Leeper and Allen Leeper to their family in Melbourne. Sir Reginald Leeper was the founder of the British Council following his transfer to the Foreign Office in London. His letters contain descriptions of European political events, 1920–1949. His brother, Allen, also worked for the British Foreign Office.

• Loh, Morag.

  • In 1975 Morag Loh began to interview Italian immigrants and their families about their experiences in Australia. The cassettes copied for the Library consist of interviews with four Italian immigrants who provide detailed accounts of their lives in Italy and Australia. Information from these interviews was included in Morag Loh's recent book on the Italian immigrant experience.

• Melbourne Chamber of Commerce.

  • The Melbourne Chamber of Commerce was established in 1851 and the first transfer of its records to the La Trobe Library comprised records for the period 1851 to 1921. The minute books recently presented extend holdings to 1959. Also included is one volume of minutes of the Chamber's Approved Society.

• Melbourne Steamship Company.

  • The Melbourne Steamship company included in its holdings a number of shipping subsidiaries. The records of this Company and its subsidiaries include minute books, share registers, employee records and financial ledgers. They mainly concern the period 1940–1962 although there is some earlier material.

• Melbourne Lyceum Club.

  • The Melbourne Lyceum Club, formed in 1912, draws its membership from women with academic qualifications or distinction in the fields of art, music, literature, philanthropy, education or public service. Many distinguished Victorian women have been associated with the Club, and its records include correspondence, minute books, membership and financial records and miscellaneous papers.

• Peters, Edwin Francis.

  • Ned Peters (1833–1909) worked claims on most of the goldfields around Bendigo. His diaries, which span the years 1851–1857, provide a vivid account of the hardships faced by the miners and their families. Included with these papers are transcripts of the diaries which were prepared and edited for publication by Les Blake.

• Port Phillip Association.

  • The Port Phillip Association was formed in Tasmania in 1835 to explore and settle the Port Phillip district. A permanent settlement was established at Melbourne in late 1835, following John Batman's exploration of the area in May-June of that year. These papers include letters to Charles Swanston, a leading member of the Association, from Batman, J. T. Gellibrand, Michael Connolly and George Mercer as well as a number of related financial documents and miscellaneous items.

• Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union Records.

  • The Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union first began to transfer its archives to the La Trobe Library in 1971. This further installment includes the collections of Reta and Sidney Vellenga, C. E. W. Bryant, J. S. p. Ramsay and letters from Dr. MacGillvray to W. K. McLean.

• Royal Society of Victoria.

  • The Royal Society of Victoria has played a major role in the advancement of scientific and philosophical study in this state. The Society has decided to deposit its records on permanent loan with the La Trobe Library and the first installment includes correspondence files, a scrapbrook, minute book and photographs.

• St. Pauls Cathedral.

  • The Diocese of Melbourne was founded in 1847. It encompassed the whole of Victoria until 1875 when the Bishop of Ballarat was consecrated, to be followed in 1901 with the creation of the Dioceses of Bendigo, Wangaratta and Gippsland. The records of St. Pauls Cathedral comprise those of the Diocese of Melbourne and its later dioceses, including correspondence, financial records, baptism registers

• Sharman, Matthew Stanton.

  • Matthew Sharman was an outstanding and long serving headmaster of University High School (1915–1941). This volume of correspondence between Sharman and old boys and masters serving in the First World War reveals the close relationship he formed with his staff and students. These letters complement other Sharman material held in the Library and our large collection of First World War material.

• Standish, Frederick.

  • Frederick Standish (1824–1883) was appointed assistant commissioner of the goldfields at Sandhurst in 1854 and later was also protector of the Chinese. He relinquished these positions upon becoming chief commissioner of police in Victoria in 1858. Standish took an active interest in life at Sandhurst and his diary provides details not only of his official duties but also an account of the life of a gentleman on the goldfields.

  • In May 1978 the first Women and Labour Conference was conducted at Macquarie University to discuss issues affecting women. The records of the Second Conference, held in Melbourne in 1980, include minutes, correspondence, financial records, photographs and miscellaneous papers. The group which organized the Melbourne Conference continues to meet and minutes and correspondence of this group are also included.

• Woods, Graham.

  • Dr. Woods conducted interviews with 37 people closely involved with the Victoria Institute of Colleges during its fifteen-year existence. The resulting tapes provide a fresh insight into this organization. Interviewees include D. H. Borchardt, Dr. Norman Curry, Sir Louis Matheson, Dr. L. W. Shears and Dr. R. C. Traill.
