  • The Archaeological Society of Victoria was formed in 1964, at the suggestion of Dr. W. Culican, by a small group of people who had been attending his Council for Adult Education lectures on archaeology. Its activities have included lectures, digs, laboratory work and the publication of the journal Artefacts. These records include minutes, correspondence, circulars and newsletters.

• Book Collectors' Society of Australia, Victorian Branch

  • The Victorian branch of the Book Collectors' Society was formed in 1958, and has included in its membership many noted collectors of Australiana, among them several benefactors of the La Trobe Library. Its records includes minutes, correspondence, circulars, financial records, and copies of the parent society's publication Biblionews.

• Bottomley, Rev. William.

  • The Reverend William Bottomley (1881–1966), who lived in Australia from 1926 until his death was a minister of the Melbourne Unitarian Church. In 1950 he broke from the parent church and established two new Unitarian bodies, the Unitarian Fellowship of Australia and the Community Church at Seaford. His papers include material relating to this split, as well as correspondence, diaries, sermons, talks and book reviews.

• Brodney, Alfred Tennyson and May

  • A. T. (Bob) Brodney (b1896) and his wife, formerly May Francis (1894–1973) have been in the forefront of left-wing and radical activities in Australia since the early 1900's. Their papers include material relating to the Militant Propagandists of the Labor Movement, the formation of the Communist Party of Australia, the anti-conscription movements during both World Wars and other matters. Also included are 12 tapes of Bob Brodney's reminiscences recorded in 1979–1980 by Dr. Janet McCalman.

• Carlton Refuge.

  • From 1857, until its closure in 1949, the Carlton Refuge provided a home for destitute women and their babies. These records of its work include minutes, financial records and a visitors' book.

• Carngham Station.

  • Copied from originals in the possession of Mrs. Eleanor Russell, through Mr. P. L. Brown and Mr. J. O. Randell. Carngham, a pastoral property west of Ballarat, was purchased in 1843 by Philip Russell and Robert Simson (both kinsmen of George Russell of Golf Hill). These papers include personal and business correspondence, station books, financial and legal papers and records of the Russell family.

  • The firm of Cole Brothers, painters and decorators and importers of decorating material, was established by James and John Cole in the 1850s. Most of these records, which include journals, day books, ledgers, time books and receipts, are for the period 1860–1920.

• Communists and the Labour Movement Conference, 1980.

  • To mark the 60th anniversary of its formation, the Communist Party of Australia organised in August 1980 a conference to explore the history of the Party and its role in the labour movement. In about 70 sessions some 100 speakers discussed a wide range of subjects. A recording of every session is included in this collection.

• Dyason, Isaac Edward.

  • Isaac Dyason (1832–1915), an accountant and mining company director, kept extensive diaries for most of his life. The first of these concerns his experiences as a gold miner in 1851. The following 41 volumes contain entries almost daily for the years 1859–1915, giving a valuable account of both Dyason's business career and his private and social life in Bendigo.

  • In the past year Mr. Feehan, a regular benefactor of the La Trobe Library, has presented a preliminary version of his biography of the South Australian pastoralist Alexander Cameron; a biographical sketch of Alexander Mackillop; and material gathered during his work on Joseph Bosisto.

  • Sylvia Mina Goodman (1899–1979) was a supporter of many educational and women's organisations, and particularly active in the development of kindergarten and pre-school education. Among her papers are records of the bodies with which she was associated, as well as a variety of reports and working papers in her areas of interest.

• Hughes, John Mills.

  • John Mills Hughes (1839–1905), a surveyor and prospector, came to Australia in 1866. His papers include a journal of his voyage from England on board the Yorkshire, and detailed diaries of his varied life in New Zealand and Australia (including Melbourne, Wagga, Albury, Rushworth and Walhalla) from 1867 to 1891, illustrated with his own sketches.

• Hughes, Robert Watson.

  • Robert Hughes, composer and member of staff of the Australian Broadcasting Commission, had his first composition performed in 1938. This collection comprises some 30 compositions, including orchestral pieces and music for radio, television and film. Also included are a small amount of correspondence, papers related to his official positions, programmes and recordings of his works.

• Irvine, Hans.

  • Hans Irvine (1855–1922) did much to make the name of Great Western as a wine—, and especially champagne-making, district. This collection includes daybooks, cellar records and tasting notes, wine making and testing implements, photographs, leaflets and some personal papers. Also included are some business and personal papers of Irvine's nephew, Alfred Osler Watson, who was manager of Irvine's London sales outlet and later manager of Great Western Vineyards.

• Ramsay family.

  • The Reverend Andrew Mitchell Ramsay (1809–1869) came to Melbourne from Scotland in 1847 and soon became the leader of a Presbyterian congregation “unconnected with the state”. These papers include his diaries, kept intermittently from 1844 to 1868; poems written between 1853 and 1859 by his son, the Hon. Robert Ramsay (1842–1882), solicitor and politician: a war diary kept by Lieutenant Robert A. Ramsay in 1914–1915; and a sequence of letters and other papers by W. R. Guilfoyle.

• Riversdale Golf Club.

  • Surrey Hills (later Riversdale) Golf Club was founded in 1892, and was one of the earliest clubs in Victoria. A history of the club was published in 1977. These records include minutes, financial and membership records, scores, photographs and working papers for the Club's history.

• St. Stephen'S Church, Richmond.

  • St. Stephen's Church was opened for divine worship on 16 November 1851, although subscriptions for its erection had opened two years earlier. The Church's records include the original subscription list, minutes, correspondence, financial records, photographs, preachers' books and a full set of marriage records from 1859 to 1963.

  • Daphne Pearson, G.C., was the first woman in Britain to be decorated for bravery in World War II. She has been the leading Australian figure in the Victoria Cross and George Cross Association, which is based in London. Her decords include correspondence, minutes, photographs and other records of medallists' reunions both in Australia and overseas.

  • In 1917 the first baby health centre in Victoria was established by a small group of women, led by Dr. Younger Ross. Later that year, as more centres were established, the Victorian Baby Health Centres Association was formed. These records of its work comprise minutes of its Council, Executive Committee and Finance Committee together with a large number of photographs.

  • As well as minutes, correspondence and reports of the Association itself, this collection includes records of other organisations and events (such as the National Parks and National Monuments Campaign, 1946–1948) and historical and other papers of Charles Daley.

  • These records comprise minutes of the State Parliamentary Labor Party from 1900 to 1980, together with minutes and reports of the Shadow Cabinet from 1976 to 1980.

  • Bertha Walker (d. 1975), labour and anti-war activist, unionist and writer, was the daughter of the labour activist Percy Laidler. Her papers include correspondence, leaflets, information files, an unpublished autobiography, papers of the Anti-Conscription Jubilee Committee, 1966, and working papers for a book on the great depression. (The last item is restricted.)

• Williams, Louis.

  • Louis Reginald Williams (1890–1980) was one of Australia's foremost ecclesiastical architects and a life fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects. Cathedrals, churches and chapels designed by him stand in many Australian cities. His records include financial papers, files on each of the buildings he designed and personal papers. (Drawings and plans are held in the Library's Picture Collection.)

• Winter Cooke family.

  • Samuel Pratt Winter, a descendant of an old-established Irish family, emigrated to Tasmania in 1833 and later settled in Victoria's Western District, where his descendants still live. This outstanding collection of the family's papers includes correspondence and other personal papers, station diaries and stud books, legal documents, maps and genealogical records.

  • The Women Justices' Association of Victoria was formed in June 1938 by Mrs. J. Rapke, J.P., the Association's first President. These records include minutes, correspondence and financial records, as well as papers relating to the International Association of Youth Magistrates, the National Council of Women and the Australian Local Government Women's Association.

• World Education Fellowship (Victorian Section). Records, 1932–1977.

The Victorian section was formed in 1932. Its records include correspondence, minutes, financial and membership records, reports and conference papers.

  • Presented by Wright Stephenson (Australia) Pty. Ltd.
  • The Melbourne firm of bloodstock auctioneers, Adamson, Mackinnon and Cox Pty. Ltd., was established in 1922. In 1951 the company was taken over by Wright, Stephenson (Australia) Pty. Ltd. As well as records of bloodstock sales from 1924 to 1959, these records include the director's minute book from 1922 until 1959 and miscellaneous financial records.

• Darvall, Charles George
  • Watercolour and pencil drawings of the Victorian Alps and Bendigo, 1857–1924. 30 photoprints from originals.
  • Originals lent for copying by Mrs. M. Stevens. Darvall, a colonist for sixty seven years, began life in Australia as a goldminer in Beechworth. He was later employed as a teacher at the Sandhurst School of Design before opening a private studio.

  • This suberb record of Gippsland at the turn of the century is the work of a talented amateur photographer who was a bank manager by profession.

• Jack. Robert Lockhart

  • Robert Jack was a Victorian who travelled extensively in the Far East. The collection includes photographs taken on a four hundred and fifty mile trek made by the photographer and his father, geologist Robert Logan Jack, through uncharted regions between China and Burma at the time of the Boxer Rebellion.

  • Wal Larsen, a railway enthusiast, has spent nearly forty years documenting Victoria's trains. This extensive collection contains photographs of many trains and lines which have since disappeared.
